Top 5 activities for families of 5 in Queensland

Cost is a big consideration when holidaying with kids. Choosing appropriate accommodation is important, but so is choosing low cost activities. My daughter Amber and I have travelled extensively through Queensland writing reviews for www.kidswelcome.com.au. Here are a few of our favourites, butthere are over 2000 on the web free web directory.

Watch turtles hatch

Where: Mon Repos, Bargara Beach, Bundaberg

It’s a natural wonder to match the whale migration and the march of the penguins. Each year turtles nest and hatch at Barbara Beach near Bundaberg in huge numbers. There are two seasons: The laying (November to January) and the hatching (January to March). For both, and a few miniscule dollars, you can join rangers for an evening watching this natural marvel. The hatching is our favourite – watching tiny turtles battle the waves is sure to crack the hearts of even monosyllabic teens and ignite adult’s paternal instincts.

Fossick for sapphires

Where: Rubyvale and Sapphire

When you get away from the coastal strip in Queensland, it’s rather like stepping back in time. The dirt is red and streets dusty. This is the backdrop for a treasure hunting adventure and, as you approach these towns, signs offering ‘clean wash’ abound. These are buckets taken from sapphire mines and, with a little instruction, they provide hours of fun washing, sifting and exclaiming for as little as $8 a bucket.

Dino discoveries

Where: Richmond, Hughenden, Winton

Parts of Queensland’s outback region used to be an inland sea which makes it the best place in Australia to find fossils. Richmond boasts the Kronosaurus Korner attraction with a working lab and theatre and a fossil digging sandpit for the little ones. The Flinders Discovery Centre in Hughenden houses Hughie, the 7m muttaburrasaurus replica of the first entire dino skeleton found in Australia. And Lark Quarry in Winton is the site of a dino stampede. If you have dinosaur nuts in your family, the dino trail is a must!

Magnificent Maggie

Just off the coast of Townsville, Magnetic Island sits like a jewel in the crown of the Coral Sea. Accessible by quick ferries 19 times a day, Maggie is best explored by mini moke. These small, jeep-like vehicles are open on the sides and instantly transport your family holiday of five into mode. More than 50% of Maggie is national park and one of the most famous walks (4km) is The Forts walk where it’s common to spot koalas in the wild. Maggie boasts 23 beautiful beaches and holiday accommodation options cover all styles and budgets.

The land that time forgot

In the Gold Coast hinterland, only a short drive from the famous theme parks, the quaint Tamborine Mountain awaits and Thunderbird Park combines inexpensive accommodation with numerous kid- friendly activities. Young kids will love digging for Thunder Eggs (natures volcanic bubbles) or wander up stream with the whole family in summer for a dip in the beautiful water hole.

It’s a bit more expensive, but the high ropes adventure course is great for one parent and teens while the rest of the family relax around a campfire. With Tarzan swings, suspended beams, bridges and flying foxes, it’s possible to stay in the treetops for three hours! Different colour courses are designed for varying abilities.

Hilton Surfers Paradise “Doing It For The Kids” Package.

Hilton Surfers Paradise great for kids
One of the Gold Coast's newest apartment buildings is offering a kids friendly promotion until 31st may 2012.

Holiday for 5 recently experienced the “Doing It For The Kids” Package for a weekend stay and in the words of our 10 year old, “it was awesome!”.

On offer (from the hotel website) is:
  • Complimentary upgrade to a Two Bedroom Deluxe Ocean Residence.
  • Full buffet breakfast for the family.
  • Mini-Hilton Passport which includes;
  • Family pass to Skypoint Observation Deck
  • Two Games for the family at Strike Bowling
  • Two hour use of the movie theatre; watch your favourite DVD from our library, bring your own or connect the Playstation 2! Includes pop-corn and soft drinks!
  • Once passport is fully stamped, proceed to The Food Store for your milkshake
We were firstly delighted to discover the hotel is located right in the heart of Surfers Paradise, on the corner of Cavil Avenue and Orchid Avenue. Once we had parked the car we did not required it again until we left as we were able to walk to nearby shops, restaurants and main beach.
On our arrival we found the staff could not do enough to help us enjoy our family escape together.

There are several room options available to a family of 5. With younger children the a two bedroom “Deluxe Ocean Residence” we stayed in would be suitable, as you can have twin beds set up in the 2nd bedroom, and with an extra linen charge you can also use the sofa bed.
Another option is taking two adjoining two bedroom apartments (perhaps more suitable for families with teenagers), or a three bedroom sub-penthouse.

The two bedroom apartments we viewed were really lovely: very new and well fitted out with dreamy ocean views.  The apartment layouts were quite different however so ask to see the floor plan options available.

We liked details in both rooms like bath robes, hair driers in both bathroom and en-suite (again, good for teenagers..) The kitchen areas are well stocked for families wishing to prepare food. There are flat screen TV’s in the living and main bedrooms.

After a look around the extensive pool area on the second floor (which provides a choice of heated, lap, and spa pools plus sauna), the Concierge escorted us to the pre booked private movie theatre. The children were delighted to be able to choose a movie and feast on an array of snacks and drinks. It was a truly indulgent experience.

We were also provided with tickets to visit the Q1 tower Skypoint Observation Deck which is situated a few blocks away and offers amazing views over the Gold Coast and was well worth the visit.

Buffet breakfast at the Salt Grill restaurant was included in the promotional pass, and provided a good choice of food and pastries, and eggs made to order. The service was polite and attentive, as we had come to expect at the Hilton.

On the Sunday morning we were booked into Strike Bowling across the street from the Hilton. This was a thoroughly enjoyable experience to share as a family, and a change from the “mega” amusement parks you normally associate with the Gold Coast.  It is refreshing to take time out for a bit of old fashioned family fun together.

Our stay was capped off by complimentary milkshakes at the ground floor café at checkout, and our ever helpful Concierge, Greg assisting us with our belongings.

Our eldest son turned 10 during our stay and the “Doing It For The Kids” package proved to be a perfect way to celebrate the occasion.

From this Family of 5, the package gets given the big thumbs up and it is encouraging to find a family tailored package put together at a premium, well located hotel.
